Unlike other cartilage piercings like the tragus, rook, or the daith, an industrial ear piercing spans across the width of the ear, connecting two holes with a single piece of jewelry—typically a barbell or a chain. One hole is often toward the front of the head on the upper ear—known as the forward helix—while the second hole is lower on the opposite side of the ear, called the helix.

In parts of Europe, industrial piercings may be referred to as scaffold piercings, and a vertical industrial piercing is also known as a suicide industrial. The industrial piercing used to be associated with edginess and punk scenes, but has grown into a stylish addition to the cartilage piercing party.

There aren’t many piercings as striking and instantly recognizable as the industrial piercing. Just like other types of jewelry, you have a great selection of the different types of industrial piercings to choose from. While many people opt for the clean look of a single barbell running across the ear, options are much wider. If you loved one industrial piercing, you may be able to wear two at the same time to include double industrial piercings that run parallel, cross over each other, or run perpendicular with one vertical and one horizontal. Decide what type works best for the look you want and choose from many types of industrial piercing jewelry, including these styles:

  • Barbell piercings: These are one of the most well-loved types of industrial piercings. Some barbells can have gemstones, charms, or other designs in the middle of the bar while others decorate the ends.
  • Industrial piercing chains: Try an industrial piercing without a bar. For a delicate look, choose a gold or silver chain that hangs loosely between two studs or rings, or have a pendant or a charm dangle off a barbell. For a regal look, try styles with multiple cascading chains.
  • Floating industrial piercings: When looking at this style, it can be difficult to see where the holes are, as they go front to back through the ear, giving the appearance that the bar is floating. Depending on your anatomy, you can have a few variations where one end appears to float, or both, and is a solution for those unable to fully pierce both sides of their outer ear.
  • Fake industrial piercings: Try this piercing style on for fun, without any commitment. Some faux industrial piercings can completely fool the eye depending on the type, which could include magnetism, a wire hidden behind your ear, or using clips or ear cuffs.
  • Cartilage studs: One of the best parts about having an industrial earring is that it is technically three piercings in one. You can use a bar or a chain between the two, or use studs or rings and wear them as two separate pieces of jewelry.
