Couch pillows are a cozy and luxurious addition to any space, but if you want to achieve that magazine-esque level of interior design, there are a few styling tips to keep in mind.
Pillow size: Choose a size that meets your needs. Somewhere around 18 to 20 inches is a popular size for a standard couch. Starting with larger pillows towards the outside and working smaller inwards is a good rule of thumb to follow. For example, place two large couch pillows on either end with two smaller pillows in front.
Number of pillows: There’s no right or wrong amount of pillows to put on your couch, but the standard number is usually between two and five—though odd numbers tend to look best. Five tends to be the magic number for most couches but if you have a large L-shaped couch you might want to have more. For sectional couches, you could do three groups of three pillows for each corner or one large pillow on either end and a grouping where the couch bends. For most loveseats or three-seater couches, aim for a couple of pillows on the ends with an accent pillow in the middle.
Pillow color and materials: When you think about the look of your couch, aim for pillows that will complement the space. Consider the color palette and other textures you may have on chairs, blankets, or rugs when choosing the pillow’s material and color. Play with embroidered couch pillows for vibrant pop of color or choose linen couch pillows for a more muted look.
Pillow grouping: Creating pillow groups is a key part to making the entire ensemble come together. Mix and match print styles, textures, sizes, and shapes to get the most impact out of your pillows. If you’re not sure about your grouping, look at some couch pillow sets on Etsy and pick up a grouping curated to work together.
